Let’s be honest, patch testing can feel like a bit of a hassle when you’ve coloured your hair for years with no problems. But it’s there for one important reason: to protect you.
At MAYFIVE Hair, we follow L’Oréal Professionnel’s patch testing policy, which requires an allergy test at least 48 hours before your colour appointment.
Even if you’ve coloured your hair before, or have previously used L’Oréal, you’ll still need a fresh patch test.
Here’s why:
Every hair colour brand has its own unique formula, and even small ingredient changes can trigger reactions.
You’ll need a new patch test if:
The test is valid for six months, but after that, or if anything changes (like a new tattoo, pregnancy, or certain medications), we’ll need to do it again.
You can learn more about allergy testing at Be Colour Safe.
The process is simple and quick. We’ll apply a small dot of colour behind your ear and leave it for 48 hours. This allows time to check for any signs of a reaction.
If you notice any redness, itching, soreness, or irritation, either on the patch site or elsewhere on your body, let your colourist know straight away. Sometimes mild itchiness simply means you’re sensitive to a product, and we can look at alternative options to keep you comfortable and safe.
Think of a patch test as part of your regular beauty and self-care routine. Just like you’d test a new skincare product, it’s a simple way to make sure your colour appointment is safe and stress-free.
After all, your hair and skin are the clothes you never take off, so treat them with care.
At MAYFIVE Hair in Chiswick, your health and safety always come first. If you’re unsure whether you need a new patch test before your next appointment, just give us a call or pop into the salon, we’re always happy to help.
