After your colour has been washed off, your stylist might apply a toner, and one of the most common questions I hear in the salon is, “Why do I need a toner? Has something gone wrong?”
The short answer is: no, nothing has gone wrong! A toner is a normal and essential part of the colouring process, especially if your hair has been lightened or pre-lightened.
When we pre-lighten (bleach) hair, we’re simply removing pigment, not adding new colour. Once the bleach is rinsed off, what’s left behind is what we call the “raw undercoat.”
This raw undercoat reveals your hair’s natural underlying pigment, which can appear anywhere from red and orange to yellow, depending on how light your hair lifts.
That’s where the toner comes in.
A toner helps refine and perfect the colour after lightening. It can:
Even if the hair has lifted perfectly, I still apply a toner because it adds that extra gloss and helps your colour last longer between appointments.
Toners do fade, how quickly depends on your hair type, the shade used, your hair’s condition, and the products you use at home.
That’s why your colourist should always explain:
During your consultation at MAYFIVE Hair, we always plan this out and make sure you leave with the right aftercare routine for both colour longevity and overall hair health.
Toners aren’t a sign that something’s gone wrong, they’re the finishing touch that makes your colour look polished, professional, and beautiful.
So next time you’re in the salon and your stylist reaches for the toner, you’ll know it’s all part of achieving that perfect, salon-fresh shade.
