The 70s are back – and salons everywhere are seeing a fresh take on the era’s iconic “shag” haircut. Katie explains how the mid-length shag keeps all the movement and texture of the classic style but with a softer, more wearable finish.
“A mid-length, or medium, shag is a trendy haircut that falls around shoulder length and features a choppy, layered cut,” Katie told Country & Town House. “It creates a textured, tousled look with face-framing layers and often includes bangs. The hairstyle can be customised for a range of looks, from sleek to messy.”
Katie also shared that this modern version works beautifully across different face shapes and hair types — especially oval, round and heart-shaped faces, and those with fine to medium hair who want extra volume and movement.
When it comes to styling, Katie recommends texturising spray or mousse to enhance the natural layers, or a sea-salt spray for that effortlessly tousled finish. For a more polished vibe, a round brush blow-dry will smooth out the ends while adding lift at the roots.
The result? A versatile, undone-but-intentional cut that’s equally at home on the street or the red carpet.
